Salang highway re-opens

Salang highway re-opens

Mar 07, 2011 - 17:54

CHARIKARinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Salang highway partially reopened on Monday afternoon after being closed since midnight due to heavy snowfall, officials said.

Some of the snow, which had blocked the highway for several hours, had been cleared so that passenger buses could pass through, Salang head of maintenance and protection, Gen. Rajab told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Salang highway connects nine northern and northeastern provinces with Kabulinfo-icon. The highway was blocked at midnight and was reopened at 3pm, Rajab said.

Jabulsaraj district chief, Col. Naeemullah, said only passenger vehicles were allowed to use the highway.

He requested drivers have the necessary equipment such as snow chains and heating devices to drive in the area. He said heavy transport vehicles would not be allowed to pass through until the road is completely cleaned.

Since Sunday night about 100 passengers and 100 transport vehicles had been stuck in Tajikan area of the highway.
