US politicians vow continued support for Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai, who is expected to launch the transfer of responsibility for security from coalition to Afghan forces on Monday, met US politicians in Kabul, a presidential statement said on Sunday.

Led by minority leader of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, the US delegation discussed with Karzai issues concerning reconstructioninfo-icon efforts, peace process and the development of Afghanistaninfo-icon, the statement said.

It said the delegation assured the President the US would continue to assist Afghanistan in areas of development and reconstruction beyond the 2014 deadline, when foreign troops will complete the drawdown process.

Quoting US officials as saying, the release said the Congress will approve donations of US government to assist Afghanistan despite the states' current economical problems.

The delegates said they wanted to know what the Afghan government was doing to bring effectiveness and betterment to spending US donations, so the Congress members could make better decisions while approving such aids for the country, the statement said.

Karzai told the delegation that the US played a significant role in brining improvement to the lives of Afghan people. The president also thanked US for its donations.

Karzai asked finance minister to submit the delegation the Afghan government's policy regarding the use of US funds.

The Congress members voiced their support to the Afghan government-initiated peace process.

On Monday, Karzai is expected to mark the start of the Afghan new year by announcing up to four provinces and three major cities to be handed over this summer, the first phase of the long-awaited transition process.
