10 killed, 42 wounded in Bagram blasts

10 killed, 42 wounded in Bagram blasts

Oct 26, 2011 - 09:25

CHARIKARinfo-icon (PAN): At least 10 people were killed and more than 40 others wounded in two back-to-back oil tanker explosions near the main US military base in central Parwan province, officials said on Wednesday.

A magnet bomb, attached to a fuel tanker, went off on the road leading to the Bagram Airfield late on Tuesday evening, damaging the vehicle, the governor’s spokeswoman, Roshna Khalid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

As residents gathered to collect fuel from the tanker, a second explosion shook the area, killing 10 civilians and injuring 42 others, she said, adding the victims were taken to Panjsher Emergency Hospital, Parwan Civil Hospital and Bagram Clinic.

She feared the death toll could go up, because several wounded people were in critical condition.

But Public Healthinfo-icon Director Mohammad Qaseem Saeedi put the toll at five dead and 45 injured. On the other hand, Parwan Civil Hospital Director Dr. Abdul Khalil Farhangi confirmed receiving three dead bodies and 33 wounded people. Some of them are said to have suffered serious burn injuries.

A witness, Syed Mahboob, said: "The first explosion was small. When the people rushed to the site to take fuel, the second bomb exploded, killing all of them."

Without putting a figure on the casualties, he said some nearby vehicles were also damaged in the detonations. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attacks.
