KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday pledged to reform the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) at an appropriate time, his office said.

During a meeting with an IEC delegation led by its Chairman Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani, the president said the panel should preserve its independent status to win public confidence.

Nuristani informed President Ghani about multiple related issues facing the commission, including the upcoming parliamentary polls, the statement said.

It added the president and IEC officials discussed technical, security and administrative issues. They stressed the need for free, fair and credible elections throughout the country.

Ghani said: “I respect the independence of IEC and want you to preserve this in a way that the people and civil societyinfo-icon organisations trust you.”

Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. ABdullah had promised during their election campaigns to bring reforms to the commission and restore people's confidence in it.

Last year Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon members had urged drastic reforms in the duties and responsibilities of both election commissions, but no tangible steps had been take so far.
