PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Security forces claimed killing 12 rebels and injuring 18 others in a gun battle that sparked after attacks by heavily-armed insurgents on security check posts in Kharwar and Baraki Barak districts in central Logar province, provincial police chief said Saturday.

Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai told Pajhwok Afghan News hundreds of militants arrived in Logar to stage anti-state activities in the area.

Ishaqzai added security forces entered into intense gun battle that left 12 insurgents dead in Kharwar district and their bodies were lying still in the area.

Eight more insurgents were killed and 18 others wounded in Baraki Barak district. The security forces remained unhurt in the clash, he added.

Eng. Mohammad Rahim Amin, district chief of Baraki Barak district, confirmed an hour long clash between security forces and militants on Friday night.

He, however, did not give exact figure into militants casualties but warned security forces be prepared for further attacks.

Niaz Ullah, a local resident, confirmed insurgents attacked a police station with heavy and low weapons and the battle lasted for half an hour.

Zabihullah Mujahid rejected security forces claims killing 20 rebels in clashes on Friday night.
