President Ghani orders crackdown on land-grabbers

President Ghani orders crackdown on land-grabbers

Nov 06, 2015 - 23:02

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Friday ordered the arrest of land-grabbers, promising his administration would allow no one to occupy state-owned land illegally.

During a visit to central Logar province, the president told local officials the security forces must detain the individuals who had unlawfully seized sold and sold government properties.

He announced the constitution of a delegation to investigate the claims some people had staked to government lands. He pledged a crackdown on the illegitimate practice by certain unscrupulous elements.

Ghani said the team would swing into action shortly to address the long-running problem. In Logar’s capital, large swathes of state land have been encroached upon and the occupants now claim their ownership.

Governor Haleem Fidaee acknowledged land-grab impeded development plans, but the government was determined to restitute such properties at all costs. Of the 70-acre land grabbed in Logar, 32 percent had been wrested back from illegal occupants, he said.

President Ghani, referring to some groups’ high-handedness, said: “The individuals sabotaging the system are, in fact, harming themselves.” He underlined the need for such self-defeating behaviour.

He also announced the creation of a committee, headed by the minister of mines, to investigate the contract for the Miss Ainak Copper Project and resolve the problems -- if any -- therein.

With regard to chromite smuggling, he said: “It has become cyst for the government.” The semi-precious stone continues to be transferred out of the province illegally to neighbouring Pakistaninfo-icon.
