Suspected killer of Samangan peace committee head detained

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Police in northern Samangan province have arrested an individual for his alleged involvement in the killing of the peace committee chief, an official claimed on Tuesday.

Qari Saifuddin Saadat, the provincial peace committee chief, was shot dead on his way home in Khiri Bagh locality late on Monday.

Police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Qurban Massoud told Pajhwok Afghan News the area was cordoned off and the suspected killer detained with a pistol and a knife inside an orchard.

He identified the detainee as Abdul Ahad, 21, who belongs to the Khulm district of northern Balkh province. The man is said to have links with a militant outfit.

During preliminary investigations, Abdul Ahad confessed to killing the peace committee head in compliance with directive from the Talibaninfo-icon leader in Samangan.

The police chief said the suspect was also detained a month ago for having links with the Taliban. He was referred to the attorney office, but Gen. Massoud did not know why he was released.

Three months back, the former head of the peace body tendered his resignation and Saadat replaced him. He also served as secretary of the Samangan Ulemainfo-icon Council for 13 years.
