Taliban say won’t scuttle efforts to repair power pylon

Taliban say won’t scuttle efforts to repair power pylon

Jan 28, 2016 - 14:51

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Efforts are underway to restore electricity supply to Kabulinfo-icon, cut off by the destruction of a pylon in northern Baghlan province, officials said on Thursday.

Power supply from Uzbekistan to Kabul was snapped as a result of a Talibaninfo-icon attack on a pylon in Dand-i-Shahabuddin area on the highway connecting Pul-i-Khumri with Kunduz province.

Governor Abdul Sattar Barez told Pajhwok Afghan News Breshan Shirkat engineers had launch initial work to repair the pylon in the restive area -- currently the scene of a military offensive.

The power supply would resume in a day or two, he hoped, saying the security forces were stationed in the locality to protect the technical team and prevent possible attacks by the guerrillas.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid -- in a telephonic conversation with Pajhwok -- assured the fighters would not scuttle efforts to repair the power pylon.

Earlier, local officials blamed the Taliban for destroying the pylon in Dand-i-Shahabuddin area, but the militants rejected the claim as misleading. The rebels insisted the tower had been hit by the local security forces.

The attack in Baghlan cut off 250 megawatts of electricity supply to the capital. Important facilities in Kabul, including hospitals, are being provided thermal electricity.

Breshna Shirkat spokesman Tawhidullah Tawhidi said a technical team, equipped with the required tools, was in the area. But ongoing clashes at the site do not allow them to start repairing the tower.
