Roads being rebuilt with public support in Kandahar

KANDAHAR/MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): With locals’ volunteer participation, construction work on five kilometers of roads has been launched in the capital of southern Kandahar province.

While reconstruction work on projects executed under National Solidarity Programme (NSP) has been initiated in northern Balkh province.

Kandahar mayor Rokhan Wolasmal told Pajhwok Afghan News the construction of the roads in Kandahar city would take three months to complete, with each family contributing 15000 afghanis to the total cost of 26 million afghanis.

He said the people became ready to participation in development activities due to efforts by the municipality and the process would be extended to other parts of the city.

Governor Humayun Azizi praised people’s contribution to the roads’ construction and said their involvement would help maintain quality work.

In Balkh, reconstruction works on NSP projects in 503 villages aimed at creating temporary jobs for 31,000 people has been launched as part of the government’s national job finding project.

As a model launch of the job finding project in Balkh district, a ceremony in this regard was attended by local officials and residents.

Deputy minister for Rural Development Programmes Ahamd Shaheer Shahriyar told Pajhwok Afghan News the National Solidarity Programme was wrapped up after lasting 12 years across the country.

He said the job finding programme had been launched to reconstruct projects executed under NSP in all provinces, including Balkh.

He said the reconstruction projects would be implemented in Balkh, Chahar Bolak, Charkand, Kushanda, Marmal, Dehdadi, Khulm and Nehr-i-Shahi districts’ 503 villages, benefitting 230000 families.

He said the projects would cost more than 263 million afghanis. He said the national programme was aimed reconstructing projects which had been executed under NSP across the country and needed reconstruction.

The $35 million national programme would be launched in 12 provinces, including Balkh, Baghlan, Jawazjan, Faryab, Herat, Kandahar, Khost, Kunar, Kunduz, Laghman, Nangarhar and Farah.
