KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The municipality revenue of southern Khost province has increased by 50 percent this year, officials said on Thursday.

Mayor Eng. Mohammad Basir Mohammadzai said tax collection was vital to the development of the city, a process that required consistent attention.

Speaking at a public awareness programmeher, he said the municipality’s revenuetouched an all-time high of 13 million afghanis in the past month.

“Fortunately, our revenue has increased by 50 percent so far this year. We will better focus on urban development, management and city cleaning,” he added.

Mohammadzai linked the revenue hike to a campaign against corruption and building capacity of officers through different programmes.

He said 14 reconstructioninfo-icon projects worth 250 million afghanis were currently underway in Khost City. When completed, the schemes will provide residents badly-needed facilities.

“Six of the 14 projects, including the asphalt of a 12.5 kilometers road, have been executed and the rest are underway. It’s for the first time that so many projects are ongoing in Khost City simultaneously,” he claimed.

Deputy Governor Shier Shah Orguni said the municipality itself could not do anything without support from residents. The municipality should seek residents’ help, he believed.

“A single government organ cannot effectively respond to demands of all people, whose cooperation with the municipality is important,” the deputy governor continued.

Khost residents are happy about developmentschemes, but say the municipality should not allow anyone to create problems for people’s businesses.

Qadirullah, a resident of Khost City, said: “The municipality should promote awareness among people about city planning cleanliness through media and other ways.”

Some people are said to be involved in arbitrary constructionof buildings in the city. However, the mayor assured no one would be allowed to flout building laws.
