KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The five-member selection committee on Wednesday said applicants’ selection process would be finalised tomorrow and the list sent to the Presidential Palace next week.

The selection committee, tasked with nominating commissioners on the two electoral bodies, is composed of a representative from civil society, a representative from the Supreme Court High Council, a representative from the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, a member from the Oversight Commission for Implementation of the Constitution and another member from the Administrative Reform and Civil Services Commission.

The committee began accessing applicants’ documents interested to become members of the electoral bodies – Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) and Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) --- on September 4 based on a presidential order.

Javed Rashidi, the selection committee head, told a press conference here that they had vetted documents of 720 applicants and the reviewing phase had completed.

He said following interviewsinfo-icon 42 eligible people were shortlisted for the IEC and another 30 for the IECC.

However, he said, 21 nominees for IEC and 15 for IECC membership would be finalized and the lists sent to President Ashraf Ghani over the next week.

The president would choose seven commissioners on IEC and five on IECC. Rashidi said the selection committee for transparency interviewed the applicants in accordance with the committee’s regulations and in the presence of international and national observers.

Yousuf Rashid, a member and spokesman of the selection committee, said law, national participation principle and gender were considered as basic criteria during the selection process and the final list would be sent to president in a week.

He said the criteria for appointing members to the electoral bodies had been defined and the selection had not been easy task and needed time.

He said all stages of the selection process had been open and free from interference or favoritism.  He thanked the Presidential Palace and the CEO for considering the selection committee as an independent body and said there had been so far no pressure put on the committee from the two leaders.
