KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) on Sunday signed contracts for 36 projects financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to be implemented in 17 provinces.

The contracts were signed between MRRD Minister Nasir Ahmad Durrani and representatives of construction companies in capital Kabul.

MRRD spokesman Akbar Rustami told Pajhwok Afghan News the projects included construction of roads, retaining walls, irrigation dams, bridges and culverts.

He said the projects would be implemented in Kabul, Logar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar, Sar-i-Pul, Samangan, Ghorinfo-icon, Paktia, Maidan Wardak, Kapisa, Panjsher and Nimroz provinces by the Regional Integration Program (RIP).

The construction process of the projects would begin next week and would take from six to nine months to complete, he said.

Rustami added the projects would generate job opportunities for a large number of people and benefit 187,000 people when completed.

Minister Durrani, during the contracts’ signing ceremony, said 637 irrigation projects worth two billion afghanis had been implemented through RIP program in the past five years.

He said $261 million had been allocated in development budget to MRRD this year and 83 percent of the budget had already been spent and the percentage would rise to 85 until the end of the current fiscal year.
