Fighter murder: Verdict on UK soldier’s bail plea today

Fighter murder: Verdict on UK soldier’s bail plea today

Dec 21, 2016 - 11:43

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A London court is set to decide today (Wednesday) on the bail of application of a British soldier sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of killing an injured Afghan.

Sergeant Alexander Blackman, 42, has moved the Court Martial Appeal Court to grant him bail. The petition was heard last Friday, but Chief Justice Lord Thomas and Justice Openshaw adjourned the case until today.

According to Belfast Telegraph, Lord Thomas said the court would decide the issue of bail after hearing submissions from the prosecution on its stance on new evidence relating to Blackman's mental state.

In November 2013, the Royal Marine was convicted by a court martial in Bulford, Wiltshire, and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 10 years.

Blackman is seeking bail after the body that investigates potential miscarriages of justice ruled there was a “real possibility” that his conviction may be quashed.

The move comes after the emergence of new psychiatric evidence that suggests the soldier was suffering from combat stress when he shot the insurgent at point blank range in Helmand in 2011.
