20 dead, 49 wounded in Kurram explosion

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least 20 people were killed and nearly 50 others wounded in a blast at a vegetable market in Pakistaninfo-icon’s northwestern tribal region of Kurram on Saturday morning.

“At least 20 people have been killed and 49 others wounded,” Parachinar-based Political Agent Ikramullah Khan was quoted as saying by Dawn Newspaper.

The blast resulted from an improvised explosive device (IED) concealed in a vegetable box. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the explosion took place at 08:50am.

In December, 2015 a similar blast in a makeshift market in Parachinar had killed 25 people. Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Al Alami and Ansarul Mujahideeninfo-icon based in South Waziristan Agency, had claimed responsibility.

Kurram is one of the most sensitive tribal areas as it borders three Afghan provinces and at one point was one of the key routes for militant movements across the border.

It has witnessed scores of attacks and kidnappings for ransom in the past several years.

The blast occurred in Eidgah Market, where people were busy purchasing vegetables. Soldiers had reached the site and cordoned off the area. Army helicopters evacuated the injured.

Sabir Hussain, a doctor at the main hospital in Parachinar, said 11 critically wounded people died during treatment. He said there were still several people in serious condition who are being shifted to other hospitals.
