KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least 40 people lost their lives and another 16 injured in the past three days due to avalanches and freezing weather conditions in 25 provinces of the country, an official said Sunday.

Omar Mohammadi, a spokesman to the State Minister for Disaster Management (SMDM), told Pajhwok Afghan News the 25 provinces received continued snowfall for three consecutive days, triggering avalanches. He said most of the casualties resulted from avalanches and freezing weather in Badakhshan, Parwan and Sar-i-Pul provinces.

He said 18 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 49 damaged and 600 livestock were lost and more than 5,000 acres of land devastated as result of the snowfalls in the country.

Roads to a number of provinces and districts were closed and the Kabul-Balkh and Kabul-Kandahar highways were blocked by snow for traffic.

Mohammadi said avalanches and heavy snowfall had cut off many roads and highways in some parts, particularly the Onai Pass, Hajigak Pass and roads some districts of Badakhshan, Sar-i-Pul, Samangan, Parwan and other provinces.

The official said the closure of roads hindered efforts at delivering relief items to the affected families.

Aid distribution has been launched in compliance with a presidential order and two to five million afghanis had been allocated to each province for assisting the affected people, Mohammadi said.

Meanwhile, Mahdi Rohani, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works, also said snow clearance campaign was ongoing in different parts of the country.

Passengers stuck in Qarabagh district of Ghazni province were rescued on Saturday by security forces and other relevant organs, he said.
