KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than one thousand schools have been closed across the country due to security threats, depriving tens of thousands of students of educationinfo-icon, officials said on Tuesday.

Ministry of Education spokesman Mujeeb Mihardad said there were a total of 17,482 schools across the country and of them 1,006 schools were closed due to security threats.

He said the number of students across the country was 9.2 million and of them two million had be permanently absent.

This year, 300,000 students were enrolled in literacy courses and ; specials courses were arranged for 300 girls’ schools which faced security threats, he added.

Mihardad said this year 300 professional female teachers and a total of 840 professional teachers were hired in insecure districts and next year another 300,000 new teachers would to be appointed.

As many as 12,000 residential plots have been distributed to teachers in Herat, Daikundi, Paktika and Badakhshan provinces and the process will ongoing in other provinces next year.

He added 66 corruption cases were prosecuted this year, but did not name the accused.

The figures show the number of schools closed this year due to security threats has increased. Last year 700 schools were closed due to security concerns.
