Afghan cleric body challenges JUI-F chief to debate

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Ulemainfo-icon Council (AUC) on Thursday denounced Maulana Fazal Rahman’s recent comments regarding the Afghanistan conflict, saying his stance has no academic and religious justification.

Fazal Rahman, the chief of his own faction of the Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam (JUI-F), recently said peace would continue to elude Afghanistan until American and other foreign forces were present in the war-torn country. Fazal also said the Talibaninfo-icon’s regime had public support.

Maulviinfo-icon Mohammad Qasem Halemi, AUC spokesman, told reporters in Kabul that it was not the first time Fazal Reheman issued such comments regarding Afghanistan.

He said the Taliban government was ousted due to support Pakistaninfo-icon extended to the US. He claimed the Pakistan government provided eight bases on its soil to the US to launch war and defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan.

A statement from the AUC asked Fazal Rahman and other Pakistani clerics like him that where they were when Afghanistan was invaded.

The AUC accused Fazal Rehman of persuading the Pakistani Taliban to negotiations and the Afghan Taliban to fighting.

The Afghan Ulema challenged Fazal Rehman to a religious debate over his fitwas on Afghanistan and said his current stance was not academic or logical.
