10 soldiers killed, as many injured in Kandahar attack

May 23, 2017 - 13:44

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): At least 10 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have been killed and as many others wounded in a Talibaninfo-icon attack in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Tuesday.

Samim Khpalwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News, the militants stormed ANA posts in Arghandab district on Monday night. Both sides suffered casualties during the clash.

Capt. Sadiq, spokesman for the 205th Thunder Military Corps in Kandahar, confirmed the clash and said 12 Taliban militants were also killed in the incident. The soldiers also suffered casualties, he said, without giving specific figures.

But a local official, who wished to go unnamed, said 10 ANA soldiers were killed and 10 others wounded during the gun battle.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed capturing a military base and 35 soldiers in Arghandab. But Sadiq said reinforcements had arrived in the area and the Taliban had been pushed back.

Besides civilians, Afghan security forces also suffered casualties in recent militant attacks. Two days back, more than a dozen policemen were killed in a Taliban assault in southern Zabul province.
