MAIMANA (Pajhwok): The governor of northwestern Faryab province has asked religious to stoutly support the security forces and reject externalinfo-icon pressures in this regard.

Provincial government officials and civil societyinfo-icon activists sought support for the security forces at a gathering attended by elders, influential individuals and common people.

Governor Syed Anwar Sadaat told the participants that despite operations by militants supported by outsiders, the security forces had been combating terrorism effectively this year.

The governor said that over 200 militants had been killed in the past one month while 500 civilians suffered casualties in Faryab over the past three months.

He said Afghan scholars were in no way weaker than their Arab and Pakistani counterparts and should not be influenced by foreigners in issuing jihadinfo-icon-related decrees.

Abdul Ahad Aailbaik, deputy head of the provincial council, hailed security forces as courageous sons of the soil. However, he accused the government of undermining their morale.

He alleged a few individuals, who could not called loyal Afghan citizens, aided the Talibaninfo-icon in stepping up their activities against the national security forces.

He urged the international community to keep a close eye on how foreign assistance was being spent. International aid must be utilised transparently, he stressed.
