Chancellor Merkel halts deportations to Afghanistan

Chancellor Merkel halts deportations to Afghanistan

Jun 02, 2017 - 10:51

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack in downtown Kabul, which caused hundreds of casualties, Germany has put on hold deportations to Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Deutsche Welle quoted Chancellor Angela Merkel as saying on Thursday it was time to reassess the security situation in Afghanistan, where militant-linked violence has been on the rise.

She said federal and state governments had agreed on suspending deportations to Afghanistan until a further security assessment by the foreign ministry. The suspension would continue until July, she indicated.

However, Merkel explained, her administration would continue to encourage voluntary repatriation in addition to deporting criminals and those who are seen as threats to security on a case by case basis.

Also on Thursday, the German Green Party launched a parliamentary motion to stop the deportations, which were denounced as "inhumane".

On Wednesday, 300 people confronted police who wanted to detain and deport a 20-year-old Afghan in Nuremberg. Nine individuals were wounded in the confrontations.
