MAIMANA (Pajhwok): The Qurai Shaikhi area of Khwaja Sabz Posh district in northwestern Faryab province fell to the Talibaninfo-icon on Wednesday night, local officials said on Thursday.

District Chief Abdullah Masoomi said lack of cooperation, withdrawal of Afghan National Army (ANA) and the subsequent pillout of public uprising forces were behind the area collapse.

A member of the public uprising force said during Wednesday’s attack, three of their personnel were killed, two other wounded and three residential homes set ablaze by the militants.

“We expected governmental forces will come to our rescue; but contrary to our expectations, even ANA personnel stationed in the area pulled out. Eventually, we were also obliged to leave the area.”

But Gen. Janat Gul Karokhel, the 1st Brigade commander for the 209th Shaheen Military Corps, called the public uprising the main reason behind the area fall.

“ANA is positioned in an area from where they can ensure security on highway, protect check posts and support public uprising forces.”

Meanwhile, security officials and public uprising commanders confirmed Taliban’s advance on the district centre,

They warned if the provincial administration did not dispatch reinforcements, pro-government people might be slaughtered by the militants.

Hashim Batoor Beg, the Sabz Posh district police chief, said after the collapse of Qurai Shaikhi area, the Taliban staged coordinated attacks from three sides on security and uprising forces’ positions.

In a telephonic conversation with Pajhwok Afghan News, he said the insurgents were closing in on the district centre. The fighting hasd displaced dozens of area residents, he added.

But Abdul Moqim Rasokh, acting governor of Faryab, assured support to the security forces surrounded in Khwaja Sabz Posh. Reinforcements were ready to be sent there, he said.
