Media outlets warned over delay in tax payments

Media outlets warned over delay in tax payments

Sep 13, 2017 - 19:30

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A senior Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC) official on Wednesday warned media outlets of legal action and closure over failing to pay taxes in-time.

Sayed Aqa Hussain Fazel Sancharaki, MoIC deputy publications head, told a news conference here after President Ashraf Ghani exempted media outlets from paying tax fines and paying taxes in installments, media institutions should give their taxes in time.

On August 29, the president during a meeting with representatives of print, audio, broadcasting agencies and media outlets announced excepting some media outlets from paying tax fines through a decree.

The MoIC’s deputy publications head, referring to the president’s order, warned media outlets, especially audio and TV channels, of taking them off air, freezing their bank accounts, slapping travel bans and restricting their activities if they didn’t pay their taxes on time.

He said today’s conference was aimed at informing print, audio, TV channels, broadcasting agencies, media websites, translating agencies and other media outlets working under MoIC about the income tax.

“Our recent estimations show some media outlets owe 300 million afghanis to the MoIC and Ministry of Finance in unpaid taxes; but due to efforts by our ministry, fortunately the president forgave earlier tax penalties and set a seven years deadline for paying taxes in monthly installments.”

Sancharaki said MoIC was making efforts at creating awareness among people about income tax through workshops, the Radio Television Afghanistaninfo-icon, media outlets and the Federation of Afghanistan's media Organizations and Journalists.
