17 Taliban, 2 Afghan soldiers dead in Helmand offensive

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least 17 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents and two Afghan soldiers have been killed during air-and-ground operations in different areas of southern Helmand province, officials said on Thursday.

Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News NATOinfo-icon and Afghan Forces conducted airstrikes in Greshk, Bolan, and Nawa districts of the restive province on Wednesday night.

He said 17 militants were killed and two machineguns and as many Kalashnikov assault rifles seized by ANA soldiers. One machinegun and two vehicles were also destroyed in the offensive, Zwak added.

A reliable source, meanwhile, said two ANA soldiers were killed and four others wounded when their Hamvee vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Yakhal area of Greshk district.

The Taliban have not yet commented about the offensive, but the group's spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said a local uprising group commander named Bud was killed by fighters in Marja district last night.
