Security forces retake Parwan's Fanduqistan valley

CHARIKARinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan security forces recaptured the Fanduqistan valley of Parwan's Siahgard district from Talibaninfo-icon militants on Wednesday following a five-day battle, an official said.

Mohammad Haroon Mubarez, public order police commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghan the security forces retook the strategic valley without suffering any casualties.

The operation featured Afghan National Army (ANA), Afghan National Police (ANP) and Public Order Police personnel, he said. The operation was supported by Afghan Air Force.

He added: “The Taliban suffered casualties but exact figures are not yet available. Only one Public Order Police official was injured in the offensive.”

However, provincial council member Qari Abdur Rahman Ahmadi said some parts of the valley were still under Taliban control and clashes were underway in the area.

The militants seized the valley as a result of a coordinated attack on Friday. Local officials alleged the rebels tortured residents and looted their houses after taking control of the area.

Seven civilians were also killed or wounded during the five-day battle. Officials said two young girls, residents of the area, were among the dead.

Police chief, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Zaman Mamozai, said 30 Taliban militants were killed during the operation. He addedn the number of the militants injured was unknown.

However, Taliban rejected losing control of the valley. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the Taliban had pushed back several assaults of security forces.
