Ashgabat hopes bilateral trade with Kabul to reach $1b

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Participants of the 7th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference (RECCA-VII) who gathered in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat, on Tuesday stressed empowering Afghan businesswomen and increasing the bilateral annual trade volume between Afghanistaninfo-icon and Turkmenistan to $1billion.

The main meeting of the two-day RECCA-VII conference is scheduled for Wednesday to be attended by 30 foreign ministers from the region and other parts of the world and representatives of 25 regional and international organizations.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that the day one focused on empowering businesswomen and increasing bilateral trade between the two countries at an event titled “Business Forum and the Special Event on empowering womeninfo-icon entrepreneurs”.

It said First Lady Rula Ghani and the host country’s foreign affairs minister were keynote speakers at the inaugural sessions of RECCA-VII.

Other speakers included trade ministers of the two countries and heads of chambers of commerce and industries of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

The statement said Rula Ghani welcomed the holding of RECCA-VII and said: “What differentiates this event from the past RECCA conferences is that this one focuses more on investment and empowering Afghan businesswomen for enabling them to find access to international markets.”

She called the RECCA-VII a great opportunity and platform for strengthening trade ties between the two countries. “Holding of such conferences will result in development of both the countries.”

Turkmenistan’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, Dowran Orazmyradow, in his address, said such conferences would explore ways towards expanding cooperation and enhancing the bilateral trade volume between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

He praised trade ties between the two countries and said currently 93 economic programs were currently underway in Turkmenistan with participation of Afghan companies.

Orazmyradow didn’t go into details; however, he expressed happiness over the current annual bilateral trade between the two countries, saying it was currently $513 million, which showed a 22 percent increase over the past years and hoped the trade volume between the two countries would reach $1billion next year.

According the MoFA statement, working groups discussed issues regarding energy, communications, expansion and promotion of regional trade, development of private sector and strengthening trade cooperation across Asia trough Afghanistan on the day one of the two-day RECCA-VII conference in Ashgabat.

The conference has attracted representatives from 65 countries and international organizations, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Sarwar Danish, second Vice President of Afghanistan, at the head of a high-level delegation left for Turkmenistan on Tuesday afternoon for attending the RECCA-VII.

A statement from his office said the 2nd VP besides delivering a speech at the two-day conference would also meet high-ranking officials of Turkmenistan and other countries and heads of international organizations on the sidelines of the conference.

It said Sarwar Danish is accompanied by Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and other Afghan authorities on the official tour.
