LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least five smugglers have been detained in southern Helmand province with more than 700 kilograms of narcotics in their possession, an official said on Wednesday.

The Helmand Police Chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Ghafar Sapai, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the drugs were seized by the special counter-narcotics police personnel in the Rigjabar Desert area of Garamsir district.

Gen. Sapai said that 690 kilograms of opium along with nearly 20 kilograms of heroin was seized. Five suspected drug smugglers were nabbed in connection with the smuggling attempt.

Two weapons were also recovered from the detainees and two vehicles belonging to them were set ablaze at the incident scene, he added, emphasizing on their recently accelerated combat operations against the drug trade.

An employee at the provincial Counter-Narcotics Department, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that an armed confrontation also erupted between the smugglers and the security personnel during the operation.

He said that while the five smugglers and two vehicles were captured, they were a part of the larger group of smugglers who managed to escape.

The source said that two policemen had also suffered superficial wounds during the shootout.
