Police commander among 12 dead in Farah gunbattle

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Three policemen, including a unit commander, have been killed in a clash with insurgents in western Farah province, an official said on Friday.

At least nine police personnel were wounded in the gunbattle that erupted in the Shamalgah area on the outskirts of the provincial capital late Thursday night.

Police spokesman Iqbal Bahar told Pajhwok Afghan News three policemen, including unit commander, Col Dawood Baqizoy, were killed in the firefight.

Nine Talibaninfo-icon were also killed in the gunbattle, which left another five fighters wounded, he added.

Meanwhile, area residents also confirmed the clash. One inhabitant said three policemen lost their lives to the overnight battle. However, he gave no further details.

On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said Commander Baqizoy and three other policemen were killed and 10 more injured in the Shamalgah fighting.
