Govt asked to impartially probe Noor-Momand dispute

Govt asked to impartially probe Noor-Momand dispute

Aug 21, 2017 - 17:39

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has demanded an impartial investigation into the arrest of Mohammad Asif Momand, a provincial council member in northern Balkh province.

Momand was allegedly arrested by Governor Atta Mohammad Noor guards at the Mazar-i-Sharif airport on August 14. Momand’s arrest attempts turned violent and some people suffered casualties. He was, however, released a couple of days back with signs of torture on his body.

The AIHRC in a statement asked the government, particularly the judiciary, to transparently and partially investigate the incident between Noor and Asif.

The commission said no political, ethnic, tribal and other matters should influence the investigation.

The AIHRC demanded the government share results of the investigation with people and make sure that justice was served and security of common people was maintained.

The rights commission expressed concern over human rights violations and asked the government to implement global treaties, conventions and laws on human rights in the country.

The Presidential Palace has already tasked a delegation to probe the incident and the result of the probe is expected soon.
